Kiss Landing Book Launch
May 11, 2024 from 7:00pm-8:00pm
Event Information:
Fatine-Violette Sabiri’s new artist book: Kiss Landing published by Vu Photo, brings together ten years of Fatine’s photographs between Casablanca and Montréal, two cities between which Fatine has been traveling back and forth since her childhood.
To celebrate the launch, Pumice Raft hosted a conversation between Fatine and filmmaker-designer Nathan Donovan. Throughout their friendship, Fatine and Nathan have both taken turns as subjects in each other’s work and will discuss the intimacy of images and the influence of love and friendship on artistic production. Finally, the two will discuss the nebulous notion of “home” and how it has informed the narrative of Kiss Landing.
The title of the book—Kiss Landing—is an aviation term for a type of landing where the plane gently lands on the ground. Although it jostles the passengers less, this landing tends to damage the wheels of the aircraft since it burns the rubber. The metaphor here aptly expresses the feeling of being between the two cities from which the photographer comes: if coming to a country is a promise of reunion, it necessarily entails a break with the place we are leaving.
