Happenstance, Episode 2 (featuring Sanna Wani)

July 31, 2022 at 2:00PM

Event Information:
The site of this episode is Baby Point, which is a bend in the Humber River just north of Bloor Street. It is the site of a former Seneca, Mohawk, and later Missisauga village called Teiaiagon (Taiaiako'n). According to the Bureau of American Ethnology (Washington, DC), Teiaiagon translates to "it crosses the stream." However, there is a long history of early colonizers misinterpreting indigenous place names. The village was a permanent settlement to ~5000 people and was located along the Carying Place Trail—an important trade route that lead to the shores of Lake Ontario. Today, Baby Point is a site along the Humber River Recreational Trail where people use shale slabs—that make up much of the bedrock of the river—to make stackable stone sculptures at the river's edge.

Sanna Wani loves daisies. My Grief, the Sun (House of Anansi Press, 2022) is her first book.
