Happenstance, Episode 4 (featuring Ali Pinkney)

August 23, 2022 7:00PM

Event Information:
The site of this episode is the High Park Labyrinth, a painted unicursal passage that sits on the concrete foundation of the original High Park restaurant that burned down in 1956. It was initiated in 2001 by Sylvia Senensky with a group of dedicated volunteers, as a harmony project with Parks and Recreation. The labyrinth takes its form from the labyrinth inside the Chartres Cathedral in France. Historically, labyrinths condense adventure into concentric circles as a way to expedite the psycho-spatial effects of a journey through the landscape. In "Wanderlust" (2001), Rebecca Solnit’s treatise on walking, she observes that “it was breathtaking to realize that in the labyrinth, metaphors and meanings could be conveyed spatially. ”As time went on the lines of the labyrinth faded. It was re-painted by Sylvia and her team in 2004 and again in 2022 by a group of volunteers brought together by Pumice Raft.

Ali Pinkney is a literary writer and graduate student at the University of Toronto in Tkaron:to/Toronto. She holds a BA and an MA in English Literature from Concordia University, and runs the travelling poetry carnival Calliope.
